IDEAS AND ORIGINS

Initially, i got the idea of this video after seeing a meme saying “things must be chopped and cooked before they are served and ate” and it reminded me of how messy being a beginner at something can be. I wanted to convey the message that, fun should be the most important part of any creative process.

I was quite frustrated because, all my life, people have seen me as some kind of “genius” for trying new hobbies and getting better at them, but the truth is that i’m not any more special than anybody else, i just kept going until it led me to where i’m at today, not because i’m “special”, but because the fun i’m having creating is far more nourishing than the shame of “not being good enough”..

Skills always come along the way, but motivation should come from fun, from the process itself, not from the outcome. The outcome is merely the consequence of said fun, so why are more people giving up at the very beginning ?

I wanted, through this video, to display a seemingly very skilled individual (Chef’s sister) and show that, her too, started from somewhere, and that anyone that’s very skilled has started not knowing what they were doing, yet they just kept going.

Finally, I thought it would be more wholesome to convey this message through a comforting lens, which is why i went for food as the main bridge, with chef figuring out by himself what his sister meant by what she said.

THE WRITING STAGE

I knew this would be quite a dense project so i wanted to lay down every idea i had using a google docs. It’s raw, messy, but it works fine for me :). So I first started with the dialogue, then the layout with the numerotation with each number attributed to a specific action of the recipe. However, I edited many things along the process but this was my starting point. (Also i wrote “music by nesworld” because initially i wanted to compose a unique music for this animation but it was too hard since i’m still beginning so i went for “Coming Home” By Beabadoobee, I thought it was a great fit because of its comforting instrumental.

I also made a little to do list to lay down all the assets i would need to create before getting started with the animation :)

THE BREAKDOWN STAGE

Before visualising the video, i proceeded to breakdown the shots to determine their length and synchronize them with the music and dialogues in After Effects.

MIFI & MINI CHEF CONCEPT

For the younger version of chef i went for a tinier yet chubbier body alongside a bigger face, while for Mifi i made her body a little bit more chubby and taller, with chef’s looking eyes with eyelashes.

THE STORYBOARD

After writing down everything, i could finally start visualising the story taking place through camera angles as well as picturing the length of every clip.

THE KITCHEN

CONCEPT

Since Most of the animation is taking place in chef’s memory, i wanted to capture a nostalgic looking kitchen, the one he grew up in, watching his older sister cook for him while she’s talking nonsense

3D ANIMATION

At last, after completing the preparations, i could finally get started with animation :)

As suprising as it may sound, this part was the quickest and easiest of them all haha, since the main movements consisted of the flippies floating around and speaking, the only technical part was to play around with object constraints and keyframes in order to make the characters hold certain objects.

But overall, it was quite repetitive.
